A daily dose of Horror History! Each day we highlight a piece of history in the world of horror.
Leprechaun was released theatrically on January 8th, 1993, by Trimark Pictures. Leprechaun starred Jennifer Aniston in her first feature film. Leprechaun also starred Warwick Davis who played the Leprechaun. The film was written and directed by Mark Jones (Rumpelstiltskin, Triloquist), Leprechaun had a $900,000 budget and made anywhere from eight million to ten million (Depending on sources). The film was considered a moderate success for Trimark. Leprechaun would go on to spawn five sequels and a remake which hit in 2014. Davis starred in the 5 sequels but was not offered a part in the remake.

Leprechaun is a horror comedy about a evil Leprechaun in search for his stolen gold as he terrorizes a family in a small farmhouse. The film is one of my favorites, it always stuck with me from the first time I saw the trailer on whatever VHS I rented as a kid. I finally rented Leprechaun and believe it or not it scared the hell out of me. As a five or six year old kid all of the comedy went right over my head so all I saw was a creepy little monster. I would go on to rent Leprechaun and its sequels many times in the 90s, it was one of my go to titles. As time went on I picked up on the comedy more and more which lead me to a entirely new way to enjoy the film. We covered the entire series on Episode 13 of the 22 Shots Of Moodz And Horror. It was then I took off my nostalgia enchanted glasses and I watched the film for the first time with a critical eye. I realized that it really is not that strong of a film. You sometimes lose something with the films you love, It is a battle I have all the time. With that said I still love this film and look forward to not having to review it again.

In 2014 Mark Jones tried to use crowdfunding to make another Leprechaun film called Vamprechaun. It was to star Warick Davis and was going to follow the evil leprechaun after he was bit by a vampire. The idea never gained any traction ( I blame bad PR) and the campaign failed. The idea became a hit on our show and is even a part of our intro.

A Blu-ray box set was released in 2014 by LionsGate containing for the first time all six original films plus the new film Leprechaun: Origins
